Ed Sayres, Principal of Sayres Consulting, is known for building high-performing non-profit organizations positioned for sustainable growth. His practice focuses on advising directors and senior leadership on fundraising, strategy, financial and crisis management and Board development.
Ed was President and CEO of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) from 2003 to 2013. Under his leadership, private support grew 280%, membership tripled to 1.3 million and grant making jumped from $500,000 to $17 million. In New York, Ed expanded the collaborative no-kill animal shelter model he had developed at the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF/SPCA), where he was President from 1998 to 2003. The model was then exported to other major cities across the country.
Earlier in his career, Ed was the Director of PetSmart Charities, where he managed the grants program and in-store adoptions, placing more than 150,000 animals annually. He also led the Animal Protection Division of the American Humane Association and for 14 years served as President of St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, an animal protection agency in New Jersey.
Ed earned his B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from Sonoma State University.
